Aberdeen have terminated the loans of Miko Virtanen and Bruce Anderson from Abroath and Ayr United respectively. The reasoning behind this could be Derek McInnes sees both as potential first team players in the second half of the season. Either that or the Dons plan to sell or loan them both out with their contracts being up in the summer. How did both fare in their Championship Loans?
Bruce Anderson Anderson started off the season as one of Aberdeens first choice striker with Sam Cosgrove, Curtis Main and Ryan Edmondson all set for long term injuries. In that time he played 5 first team games against Rangers, Motherwell, Ross County and St Mirren all in the league and NSI Runavik in the Europa League 1st Qualifying Round. Amassing a total of 99 Minutes of football between the 5 games. With no goals and no assists and all injurees returning, Aberdeen looked to send young Bruce out on loan, in doing so he ended up at Ayr United where he played a total of 12 times, Scoring twice, assisting one goal and amassing total gametime of 796 minutes (602 League and 194 Cup). Overall Bruce was never directly involved in a goal for Ayr in the Championship, with his 3 goal involvements all coming in a massive 5-2 defeat of Albion Rovers. Which was in fact his debut for the club since joining on loan. Altogether it was a fairly poor loan spell for Bruce, although it was some much needed gametime. As for heading back to Aberdeen, there's a high chance he will be apart of Derek McInne's plans due to Aberdeen's squad being crippled by injuries and loanees returning to their parent clubs (Ryan Edmondson and Marley Watkins).
Miko Virtanen Over the past season and a half, Miko has been on loan at Championship side Arbroath. With the Finn making 23 appearances as Arbroath place 6th in their debut campaign after blitzing league one the previous season, he was also named as the clubs player of the year. Although things haven't been quite as good this season for the midfielder, with Miko and Arbroath suffering from second season syndrome. Although the Finn has played 12 times in total with a total of 989 Minutes (719 League and 270 Cup). Altogether Miko hasn't had a direct goal involvement this campaign, or last. Overall Miko has had some very valuable gametime and will surely help Aberdeen in the midfield department. Miko is currently yet to make his Aberdeen debut, with the Finn, at current time of writing, on the bench for Aberdeen's Premiership tie against Rangers. In other Aberdeen news, Manager Derek McInnes has admitted their is no one to leave, nor come in as the Dons financial situation gets worse. McInnes said, "We have been linked with so many players. Rather than dealing with them individually, there will be nobody coming in in January. “We were hopeful that we could have added and like every manager I would have liked to have added one or two, but there will be no signings coming in, in January. “We, as a club, are trying to be responsible and the current situation with the Covid issues we are just trying to be smart in what might lie ahead for us.
“I would like to make one or two changes, but I believe in the potential of the squad.”
