The former Sunderland and Blackpool manager is rumoured be in contention for the vacant position with an announcement expected within the next 48 hours.
The experienced manager and former Leicester City midfielder has emerged as Motherwell's final candidate to replace Stephen Robinson.
Former St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright, ex- Salford City Graeme Alexander and current caretaker boss Keith Lasley are all in contention for the job in Lanarkshire.
Grayson is experienced within several levels of the English Football pyramid, having managed: Leeds United, Blackpool, Preston, Huddersfield, Sunderland and Bradford City.
Throughout his time in England, Grayson has had a vast amount of ups and downs having achieved promotions with Leeds and Preston while achieving a third place finish with Blackpool.
However, in 2017, Grayson became Sunderland's shortest serving manager in their 142 year history with the club sitting second bottom in the English Championship. Grayson was then relieved from his duties following a 3-3 home draw with bottom of the league Bolton.
Then Sunderland Chief Executive Martin Bain stated: "Simon and his team have worked tirelessly to achieve the best for the football club during their time here."
"While we hoped that Simon's experience in the Football League would help us to a successful season, results have not been good enough for a club of this stature. In order for us to improve upon our current position we believe a fundamental change is necessary."
Interviews for the vacant manager role will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday this week with an announcement of Motherwell's newest addition expected soon after.
Grayson is now third favourite to get the position with former Salford City manager and Scottish international Graeme Alexander odds on favourite according to SkyBet.
