Former Arsenal and Norwich holding midfielder Charlie Gilmour has just finished a trial period with Perth outfit St.Johnstone, and awaits to hear whether the club will hand him a contract. He played 24 games on-loan at second tier dutch outfit Telstar during the 2019/20 campaign. This comes off the back of his October exit from the 'canaries' after failing to make a league appearance for the now championship side. Gilmour, who turns 22 in 3 weeks time, was highly rated at Arsenal. But failed to make a breakthrough into the first team due to the sheer quality the 'Gunners' possess. He is currently a free agent.
Despite this, the English-born Scot has played for both England and Scotland's youth teams, racking up 2 appearances in 2014 for England under 16s, and 3 for the under 17 side in 2015. The young midfielder has also made 18 appearances for Scotland at youth level from the under 15-19 age groups, with 9 of those coming for the under 19s in a two year spell. This shows that Charlie (who is of no relation to Chelsea wonder kid Billy) is clearly rated by those in the national camps.

It is thought that Gilmour could make this first appearance in a saints jersey (albeit most likely as an unused substitute) during Saturday's League Cup Semi-final against Hibernian.
Boss Callum Davidson saying in an interview this week regarding transfers, "We’re still working on it. We’ll see if we can get something done by the weekend, if not by the start of next week. Hopefully we’ll get someone in. I think it’s important for the remainder of the season.", before going on to say "It depends which one I get. There are two or three options. Hopefully we can get a couple in. If one is fit and ready to go, he’ll be put straight in." this could be in reference to Gilmour, especially due to his trial period finishing on Wednesday, it is expected that the contract could be signed as early as Thursday afternoon and announced on Friday.

This would be an exciting signing for 'saints' who have the smallest squad in the league, as well as an older midfield roster. With Craig, Davidson, Bryson and Conway all the wrong side of 32. Upon looking at this the transfer move it seems to be a well thought out one and could be a useful tool in the middle to drag the side away from a relegation scrap. Overall, With Gilmour being on a free this move is very low-risk, the young player's pedigree could reap a good reward in the long run.
