Dundee United have recently confirmed the agreement to sign Ghanaian Midfielder, Mathew Cudjoe. The ex-Bayern Munich trialist signs for United following the end of his Young Apostles contract. Currently he has applied for a visa to play in the county, the visa decision will be made after the new year to decide whether he may play in Scotland or not.
Currently at 18 years old, the Under-20 AFCON winner was recently on loan at Ghanaian Premier League side, Legon Cities FC. Cudjoe has played 18 games in the Ghanaian Premier League in their current season, scoring 3 goals. As well as going on loan to Legon Cities, the previous season he played on loan again in the Ghanaian Premier League, but this time with Asante Kotoko S.C.
The 5'6ft-left-footer, who can play off the wing or in behind the striker, recently turned 18 in November and had attracted interest from many around Europe, with Dundee United being the pick of bunch and winning the signature for the Midfielder.
I recently spoke with Ghanaian Football Expert, Frederick Gyan-Mante about Cudjoe and his playing style, here's what he had to say:
"What qualities can Mathew Cudjoe bring to Dundee United?"
"He brings diversity, he's one guy who can play across all the forward lines despite his age.. he's kinda game changer type of player with speed, power and quick feet.
He's strong, tough to handle and a real tormentor, never gets tired."
"At only 18 years of age, do you think he'd fit right into their team?"
"At a lower age than now, he played for Asante Kotoko, arguably the biggest in Ghana and won their hearts.
That exposure makes him fit and ready for a higher challenge.
If has acclimatised already then he's ready to go. If not then he needs to get acquainted with your way of doing things and he'll be ready to go".
"There is no debate about Cudjoe's attacking ability, but how does he fair defensively?"
"This is one area you can't rely on him to deliver, but he's an aggressive player when he losses ball and fights to win balls but mostly around where he is positioned.
But with this talent, I believe he's ready to learn and could be taught on how to work on that aspect of his game".
By the sounds of things Cudjoe seems to be a technically gifted, yet fast forward player. If Cudjoe and Dundee United can play their cards right then I can see this turning into a great signing, and hopefully this transfer can bring more exposure to Ghanaian Football and what it has to offer.
